Don’t mistake self-directed aligner tray treatments for Invisalign treatment. Invisalign is a pre-screened and fully supervised orthodontic treatment. Self-directed aligners only require you to create your own mould at home, and receive your trays in the mail — there is no consultation, imaging, and fitting with a dentist. You risk receiving inaccurate aligners: at best, self-directed trays can only straighten teeth, but not severe alignment issues.

Who it suits
Crowding, spacing, mild to moderate bite problems and relapse after childhood braces all respond well. Severe skeletal discrepancies, badly rotated canines and some deep bites are still handled better with fixed appliances or with a specialist referral.
What the timeline really looks like
Most adult cases run six to eighteen months. Aligners are worn twenty-two hours a day and changed on a set schedule; the treatment only works as well as the wear time. Attachments, small tooth-coloured bumps, are usually needed to grip and rotate certain teeth.
Retention is not optional

What Invisalign Treatment Looks Like Week by Week
Invisalign moves teeth with a series of clear trays, each one slightly different from the last. You wear each set for one to two weeks, twenty to twenty-two hours a day, removing them only to eat, drink anything other than water, and clean your teeth. The trays are what does the work; the appointments only confirm that the plan is tracking.

Planning and the digital preview
Treatment starts with photographs, a scan and X-rays. From those, a movement plan is built and you see a simulation of the projected result before committing. This is also the point where we say honestly whether Invisalign is the right tool. Severe crowding, significant bite discrepancies and some rotated teeth are better handled with fixed braces, and we will tell you so rather than take the case.
Attachments, elastics and refinements
Small tooth-coloured bumps are often bonded to certain teeth to give the trays something to grip. Some plans add tiny elastics. Near the end, a short set of refinement trays is common; this is normal rather than a sign the plan failed. Most cases run six to eighteen months depending on how far the teeth need to travel.

Compliance is the whole game
Invisalign only works while the trays are in. Patients who leave them out through meals and evenings add months to their treatment. Clean the trays with cool water and a soft brush, never hot water, and keep them in the case rather than a napkin. Snacking constantly is the most common reason cases run late.
Retainers afterwards
Teeth drift back for life, so a retainer is not optional. Most patients wear one nightly indefinitely. If you grind, that retainer may need to be combined with a night guard.
